I Am A Poet, and Boy Do I Know It

I am, once again, participating in Mama Kat’s weekly writing assignment.mamakat

I chose:

1.) Write a limerick.

I actually had to look up “limerick” on Wikipedia, since I had no idea what it was.  (I figured maybe it was a play on “rhyme” and “lyric?”  Not so much.)

A limerick is a poem with 5 lines, a specific rhyming pattern, and some syllable requirements…yada, yada.

It is a little complicated to explain, you may have to look it up too if you want to know more.  Or, you can just trust me.

FYI, they are also usually kind of naughty.  Mine aren’t- my Dad reads this blog after all, and we like to pretend that I am still pure and virginal.

You know the poem, “There Once Was A Man From Nantucket?”  Well, that was a limerick.

Since I am an over-achiever, I wrote two.

Enjoy:

1) Mirrors Don’t Lie

-

Today as I passed by a mirror,

the size of my rump became clearer.

It was once a small bump,

is it still called a “rump?”

To call it a “HOUSE” would be nearer.

2) The Day My Milk Came In

-

I was stacked up like Pamela Lee;

to my husband’s (temporary) glee.

They started to leak,

he let out a shriek!

For the next 10 months he let them be.

Good limericks!

I didn't have to look up limerick since I have been a long time fan of the great Isaac Asimov - king of the limerick and science fiction.

It's going to be interesting to see what everyone chooses.

I taught my fourth graders how to write these this year! You are a great poet! :)

I like your limericks better than theirs!

This is my favorite limerick:

A programmer started to cuss
Because getting to sleep was a fuss
As he lay there in bed
Looping 'round in his head
was: while(!asleep()) sheep++;
